HOURLY RATE: $15.00 hourly

General Statement

The Public Works General Laborer is a seasonal support position to the Public Works Department. The position performs variety of semi-skilled and skilled departmental maintenance duties and performs work in the operation of specialized equipment and vehicles in the operations and maintenance of the Town’s cemeteries, streets, water, and wastewater systems. This position involves daily operation of public works utilities including but not limited to:  Utility maintenance and repair, assisting water/sewer maintenance and repair,  using heavy equipment and tools, pipe repairs, garbage pickup, street repairs, building repairs and maintenance, lawn maintenance and all other duties as assigned.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Performs skilled maintenance work, and operates specialized automotive and/or maintenance equipment, in addition to a wide variety of other equipment. Performs a variety of departmental maintenance duties and performs skilled work in the operation of specialized equipment and vehicles in the operations and maintenance of the Town’s cemeteries, parks, streets, water and wastewater systems.
  • Assist in the implementation of goals and objectives; identify maintenance problems and areas; provide tree, weed, cemetery, road maintenance, water and wastewater services; implement policies and procedures.
  • Perform cemetery and road repair and maintenance, assist with water and wastewater repair and maintenance projects; select appropriate equipment and materials to complete the work according to specifications, written and/or verbal instructions, and established procedures; adapt equipment and materials to meet specific requirements of the work to be accomplished; use hand and power tools; communicate; operate some heavy equipment; drive trucks; have good depth perception; walk distances on uneven ground; visually inspect areas for safety; lift 50 pounds or more and climb ladders.

Knowledge and Skills

  • Basic knowledge of lawn care
  • Knowledge of safe operation of a variety of small power or light duty equipment and hand tools such as power mower, hedge trimmer, weed eater, electric power tools, and assorted gardening implements
  • Ability to perform simple construction projects, including painting and minor repairs
  • Ability to learn and apply knowledge of laws, safety requirements, and procedures for working with materials and supplies associated with maintenance activities
  • Ability to work on a team and maintain a positive attitude
  • Ability to practice safe work habits while in the operation of Town of Stevensville vehicle(s) and equipment
  • This position is required to possess knowledge of operation of heavy equipment and maintenance, materials, methods and the tools involved in the maintenance and/or repairs of structures such as street and alleys. 

Required Qualifications

A high school diploma or equivalency is required and two years of relevant experience. Any combination of equivalent education and experience may be considered.

Must possess a valid drivers license with an acceptable driving history. 

Possession of a class B Montana CDL is highly desirable. 

Special Condition

Employee scheduled variable hours per week based solely on department needs
Variable dates available from April/May – September/October
Duties are usually performed outdoors with exposure to sometimes extreme weather
Lifting and moving of equipment and material weighing up to 50 pounds
