Stevensville Municipal Airport
The Stevensville Airport is located just two miles northeast of the Town of Stevensville and is one of Montana’s fastest-growing general aviation airports. The airport sits on 117 acres owned by the Town at an elevation of 3,610 feet above sea level and features a 3,800-foot by 75-foot paved runway that serves a wide range of general aviation aircraft.
The airport currently supports nearly 60 based aircraft and accommodates approximately 12,500 aircraft operations each year. Because of its ideal mid-valley location and direct access to the surrounding wilderness, it has earned the nickname “The Gateway to the Backcountry.”
Airport property includes aircraft hangars and tie-downs as well as vehicle parking, while the surrounding land remains primarily agricultural and residential—uses that are generally compatible with both existing and future airport operations.
To help ensure safe and orderly development, the Town adopted an Airport Zoning Ordinance in 1989. This ordinance regulates land use and limits the height of structures near the airport, protecting navigable airspace and promoting long-term operational safety.
In 2025, the FAA and the Montana Department of Aeronautics awarded the Stevensville Airport nearly $1.5 million in grant funding to construct a new Town-owned fuel facility and complete critical asphalt maintenance and rehabilitation projects. Construction of the new fuel farm began in January 2026 and is anticipated to be complete in May 2026, with runway and pavement improvements scheduled for completion in the spring and summer of 2026.
These investments reflect continued growth at the Stevensville Airport and reinforce its role as a vital transportation asset for the community and the broader Bitterroot Valley.
Hangar Information
The Stevensville airport has an excellent, user-friendly layout, with several lease lots still available. The Stevensville Municipal Airport recently completed a runway re-build and expansion. This project widened the runway at the airport and added a taxiway to the west end of the runway. In addition to new pavement, the project improved lighting and installed a weather station.

Our Airport has the ability to serve as a base for firefighting air operations during the fire seasons in Western Montana. In the summer of 2017, the airport had up to 6 individual pads for helicopters to land for the Lolo Peak Fire south of Missoula and the Saphire Complex east of Stevensville. Fire protection services are provided by the Stevensville Fire Department via Station #2 located on the airport grounds.
