Water & Sewer Billing

The responsibilities of the Water/Sewer Billing Division include providing water and sewer service and processing billing for residential and business customers in the Town of Stevensville. The Water/Sewer Billing Division works closely with the Department of Public Works in processing applications for the following services:

Water and sewer tap connections/hookup for all new constructions.
Create new accounts.
Turn on/ turn off water and sewer services
Name/Mailing changes
Leak adjustments

The Water/Sewer Billing Division is located just inside the front entrance of Town Hall where customer service staff await to provide courteous service and assist you with questions on billing, water/sewer rates, account history and balances. If you use a bill pay service through your personal bank, you can continue to pay your water bill this way.

If you would like to pay by phone please call 406-777-5271. A transaction fee will be charged when paying by phone.

Paying in Person

The Town of Stevensville cannot accept payment for other utility bills. If you would like to pay your water / sewer bill in person, our office is located at 206 Buck Street. Walk-in hours are from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. We accept payment by credit card, debit card, check, money order, or cash (exact change only please). Drop boxes are available on the front of Town Hall. Please include your check and stub when using the drop box

Frequently Asked Questions

Do rate changes effect the water and sewer bonds?

Yes. The Town used Revenue Bonds to pay for improvements on the systems as recently as 2015. A Revenue Bond requires that the organization pledge the revenues of the systems to repay the debt. The Town separates the amounts on your bill so that users can see the amount of their overall rate is committed to repayment of the bonds. However, ALL revenue generated by the water and sewer systems has an affect on the bond requirements the Town must adhere to.

Does the Town of Stevensville offer Budget Billing?

Yes. Simply contact the Utilities Billing Division at 406-777-5271 x104, and consult with a service representative.

Your account needs to be paid to a zero balance before budget billing can be started.
The owner or renter will need to have occupied the service location for at least twelve months.
Budget Billing averages the past twelve months and the bill will stay at that amount for six months before re-averaging.

My water bill has always been consistent. Now it is suddenly very high. Why?

Feel free to contact the Utilities Billing Division at 406-777-5271 x104 with any utility bill inquiries. A sudden rise in your water bill may be due to a number of reasons including:

Plumbing leaks in toilets and/or taps
Consecutive estimated readings followed by an accurate reading (if your water usage was under estimated and your consumption for previous billing periods was higher, you may see an increase in your current water bill)
An increase in the number of people living in the house resulting in greater water usage
A dry, hot summer, resulting in higher consumption

What if I cannot pay my bill?

We understand that there may be circumstances that prevent customers from paying their bill sometimes. It is important to call the Utility Billing Division at 406-777-5271 x104 if you cannot pay your bill in full each month. If the Town does not receive any contact, your account may be scheduled for shutoff and turned over to collections. If we hear from you, we can make payment arrangements that work for your situation and assist with resources to help if needed.

Where is the water meter located in my house?

Most water meters are located in the basement. Typical basement locations are along the front wall and near the floor. Other common places include basement washrooms and laundry rooms. Many meters are located in meter pits. Most meter pits are covered with a metal lid and are often near the street. The Town of Stevensville does not recommend you enter any meter pit due to potential safety hazards. Contact the water department at 406-777-5271.

Why does my bill have a $2.00 charge each April?

Each year in April, your monthly bill reflects an additional charge of $2.00 that is collected and paid to the Montana Department of Environmental Quality. Every connection is required to pay this fee.
